Shiatsu is a form of acupressure massage developed in Japan in the early 20th century. Zen Shiatsu is based on 3 schools: Namikoshi, Seniawa and Masunaga. The origin of Shiatsu (shi = finger, atsu = pressure) dates back to before 2500 BC; it is based on traditional Chinese medicine including the meridian system, yin/yang theory, theory of 5 phases or elements and concept of Chi as life force energy/the animating principle of all things. Chi flows through a network of energy lines (the “meridians”) throughout the entire body. Blockages may arise when disruption of this stream that can cause health problems.
A Zen Shiatsu massage works directly on this vital energy and helps move the body and mind back into balance.Treatment focuses on certain points on the meridians through pressure exerted through thumbs, fingers and palms.
