People seek out therapeutic massage for different reasons.

If this is your first time getting a massage, it is important for you to be able to relax and understand that you are working with a trained professional who will help create a safe, protected environment for you so as to allow you to relax and be able to gain the greatest possible benefits from your therapeutic massage treatment.

At the beginning of your first massage therapy treatment you will be asked to fill out a brief health history in order for you to provide your massage therapist insight and an ability to fully understand any medical conditions, past injuries, surgeries or other specifics issues.

In advance of your massage, you will also be asked to address any issues or problems areas on which you would like work.

 

What to expect on my first massage therapy session


Privacy in massage therapy session

  • The therapist will explain the modalities to be applied and will direct the client on how to set up to start the session. The massage therapist will leave the room while you undress.
  • You should remove any jewelry or other articles that might interfere with the massage.
  • Remove clothing to your comfort level. Some massage modalities do not require for the client to be undressed, ask your massage therapist if you have any questions.
  • Lie on the massage table, underneath the sheets, which will cover your body except for the part being massaged.

 

 

Environment in the massage session

  • Music might be played during your massage session. If you find the music or set up distracting, let your massage therapist know.
  • Your massage therapist should check on pressure and comfort throughout your session. If you’re uncomfortable at any time, it is important you communicate with your massage therapist as all bodies and areas of the body may have different levels of sensitivity.
  • We use a Pressure Scale of 1-10 with 1 being the lightest pressure you can feel and 10 being the highest pain level you have felt. If you provide your massage therapist with the level you are feeling, it’s the best way to adjust to your desired pressure.
  • The massage table has a face cradle, which allows you to lie face-down without turning your head or neck and it can be adjusted to your comfort level.

  • The massage therapist typically uses massage oil or cream. You should be sure to let the therapist know if there are any issues or sensitivities so that they may use a different oil or lotion during the therapy session.
  • The massage therapist will massage either the full body or only specific areas that need attention, such as especially tight muscles.
  • If you’re receiving a hot stone massage, make sure you’re comfortable with the temperature of the stones.
  • Remember to breathe normally and deeply for relaxation.
  • Table massage sessions are available for 60 and 90 minutes, if you require longer session ask your massage therapist.
  • After your massage the therapist will allow you to slowly get up and get dressed in privacy.
  • Tips are appreciated to recognize outstanding service, but not required.
